Who Is Jesus? And Is He God?
Who is Jesus? The Bible tells us that Jesus is the Son of God, fully God and fully human. He is distinct from God the Father, yet one with Him in the Trinity: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. Through Jesus, we see God’s love for us and discover that He can rewrite every life story—including ours.
So how can Jesus be God and the Son of God? His words, actions, and purpose help answer that question.
Who Is Jesus?
Jesus is the central figure of the Christian faith, but the Bible presents Him as far more than a respected teacher or historical leader. He lived among ordinary people, taught about God, cared for people others overlooked, performed miracles, and invited people to follow Him.
The Bible also calls Jesus the Son of God, which can raise an understandable question: What does that title actually mean? Jesus said and did things that pointed to an identity far greater than a prophet or teacher. To understand who He is, we need to look more closely at what Jesus claimed about Himself.
Is Jesus God? Understanding the Trinity
Yes. Jesus claimed a divine identity in ways His original listeners would have understood. In John 8:58, He said, “before Abraham was born, I am,” connecting Himself to the name God used for Himself in Exodus. Jesus also said, “I and the Father are one” (John 10:30), pointing to His shared divine nature with the Father. His followers recognized this too. After seeing the risen Jesus, Thomas worshiped Him as “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28).
So, are Jesus & God the same person? No. Jesus is not God the Father. The Bible reveals one God who exists eternally as three distinct persons: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. All three are equal in nature and fully God. This is the Trinity. Jesus is God the Son, which is why Christians can say both that Jesus is God and that He is the Son of God.
Why Jesus Came to Earth?
Jesus came to earth so people could know God and have a restored relationship with Him. The Bible teaches that sin separates us from God, and we cannot repair that separation on our own. Jesus lived without sin, showed people what God is like, and went to the cross for our sins. He then rose from the dead, defeating sin and death.
Because of who Jesus is and what He accomplished, His life, death, and resurrection are at the center of the Christian faith. Through Jesus, we can receive forgiveness and begin a restored relationship with God.
Why This Matters for You?
Knowing who Jesus is changes how you understand what it means to follow Him. Jesus came to bring people into a relationship with God and invite them into a new way of life centered on Him.
Following Jesus can shape everyday decisions, relationships, priorities, and purpose. It begins with trusting Him and continues as you learn what He taught and put it into practice. As your faith grows, that may mean choosing to take the step of baptism or attending Growth Track to discover what comes next. You do not need every question answered before taking your next step with Jesus.
